As we move out of the Holiday Season we are likely to see an increase in Identity Theft stories. Identity Theft in Southern Utah is just as common as anywhere else in the world. Just this last month a gentleman, or shall we say criminal, was captured in Southern Utah; in his possession he had multiple fake ID’s and Social Security Cards riddled with names of his latest victims. What was most frightening about this was that the fake ID’s he was carrying had HIS picture on ALL of them according to KUTV. Take a minute to watch and learn about this story in the link below and pay close attention to the details because this is something that can and may happen to anyone at anytime. While it is all and good to hope it doesn’t ever happen to YOU, this simply isn’t a statistic that is in our favor anymore.
It is so important that you educate yourself on exactly what a criminal can do with your information. It isn’t just about stealing your good credit or obtaining credit cards in your name. This is traditionally what you might think is the main objective. However, what do you think might happen if he or she committed a crime and gave the arresting officer your name, posted bail and never showed up to court? What if he or she applied for social security benefits or a passport with YOUR information? And the BIG thing most people don’t take into consideration is this… What if the person who is impersonating you has a heart attack or needs emergency surgery and they use falsified information in your name at the hospital? It might seem a stretch, but it has happened; more times than you can ever imagine. These are just a few examples of why thieves are stealing the identities of others. It’s not just about credit!
Stay tuned, next week I’ll share “Five Ways YOU Can Protect Yourself From Identity Theft!” and together we’ll explore some best practices you can apply to your life TODAY!
Until then, stay safe and out of trouble!! 🙂
